If this:

“In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained’” (CCC 1374).

is true, then sometimes you gotta wonder:

When we receive Jesus in the Eucharist where does He go? How long is He in us for? Does the Eucharist go through the natural digestion process? Does Jesus enter our souls and only the accidents go onward? Or does it miraculously disappear sometime afterwards before it has a chance to go to my stomach? I know I once had these question develop in my mind over time during my 6 years of being Catholic. Have you? Gracefully, there is an answer out there. Here’s a good article from Aleteia that lets us know the answer to these question along with a fun and famous story from the life of Saint Philip Neri.

Aleteia: How long is Jesus present in the Eucharist after we’ve received Communion?

If anything, this is something to chew on as you head to Mass this weekend.

Painting: Holy Communion by Angelo Comte de Courten (1848–1925), Public Domain.
